추수감사절을 맞아 저에게 하는 말입니다.

 

 

잘 나가는 하버드 출신 MBA인 컨설턴트 스미스가 여름 휴가를 갔습니다. 따사로운 햇빛을 받으면서 선탠하고 있는데, 멀리서 어부 한명이 보였습니다. 어부는 물고기를 잡고 육지로 와서 와인을 마시며 쉬고 있었습니다.

 

컨설턴트로써 피가 끍어오른 스미스는 어부에게 다가갔습니다. 어부한테 훨씬 더 부자가 되는 법을 알려주고 싶어졌습니다. 스미스는 어부에게 이것저것 물어봅니다.

 

어부는 하루에 2시간 정도 물고기를 잡고, 그 물고기로 가족들과 나눠 먹으면서 산다고 했습니다. 스미스는 고기 잡는 시간을 늘려라 그러면 좀 더 물고기를 잡을 수 있고, 돈도 벌 수 있다고 말했습니다.

 

 “그래서요?” 라고 어부가 말합니다.

관심을 보이는 어부에게 스미스는 신이 나서 이야기를 계속합니다.

“그렇게 돈을 좀 모은 다음 더 큰배를 사세요. 그리고 사람을 고용해서 더 많은 물고기를 잡는겁니다.”

 

 “그 다음은요?”

그렇게 사람도 점점 더 고용하고, 냉동설비도 확장하고, 배도 늘려서 돈을 계속 벌어 20년정도만 고생하면 돈 걱정 안하고 편안하게 살수 있습니다.

 

 “그 다음은요?” 어부가 뭔가 아쉬운 듯이 질문합니다.

예상치 못한 질문에 스미스는 갑자기 할 말이 궁색해졌습니다.

 

“그 후에는..... 일선에서 은퇴해서 저 처럼 휴양지에 와서 친구들과 즐겁게 낚시나 하면서 여생을 편안한게 살수 있습니다”

 

그러자 어부는 어이없다는 듯이 스미스를 보면서 말합니다

“제가 지금 그렇게 하고 있는데요?”

 

우리는 우리에게 주어진 많은 행복을 생각하지 못합니다.

조금만 생각해 보면 감사해야 할 것이 하나, 둘이 아닙니다.

추수감사절을 맞아 저에게 하는 말입니다.

A boat docked in a tiny Mexican fishing village. A tourist complimented the local fishermen on the quality of their fish, and asked how long it took him to catch them.

“Not very long.” they answered in unison.

“Why didn’t you stay out longer and catch more?”

The fishermen explained that their small catches were sufficient to meet their needs and those of their families.

“But what do you do with the rest of your time?”

“We sleep late, fish a little, play with our children, and take siestas with our wives. In the evenings, we go into the village to see our friends, have a few drinks, play the guitar, and sing a few songs. We have a full life.”

The tourist interrupted, “I have an MBA from Harvard and I can help you! You should start by fishing longer every day. You can then sell the extra fish you catch. With the extra revenue, you can buy a bigger boat.”

“And after that?”

“With the extra money the larger boat will bring, you can buy a second one and a third one and so on until you have an entire fleet of trawlers. Instead of selling your fish to a middle man, you can then negotiate directly with the processing plants and maybe even open your own plant. You can then leave this little village and move to Mexico City, Los Angeles, or even New York City! From there you can direct your huge new enterprise.”

“How long would that take?”

“Twenty, perhaps twenty-five years.” replied the tourist.

“And after that?”

“Afterwards? Well my friend, that’s when it gets really interesting,” answered the tourist, laughing. “When your business gets really big, you can start buying and selling stocks, and make millions!”

“Millions? Really? And after that?” asked the fishermen.

“After that, you’ll be able to retire, live in a tiny village near the coast, sleep late, play with your children, catch a few fish, take a siesta with your wife and spend your evenings drinking and enjoying your friends…”
